Before the lights hit Times Square, The Wavy Awards reminds us where real artistry begins
There’s something special about performing in NYC that makes an artist feel like they can take over the world. So when the Wavy Awards team decided to present their open mic at the legendary location Baker Falls, the community showed up with their signature authenticity and supportive energy. Let’s take a closer look at Wavys Open Mic Brunch, hosted by the polarizing Blixunami.
Before the trophies(well, The Wavy Awards are actually liquid filled Wavy records by New Cosmos Records) and Times Square spotlights, there’s the open mic auditions. The stakes may have been high but the warmth from the audience could be felt in every corner of the room. The Wavys allow artists to show up as they are, receiving loving support from every soul in attendance. Every event hosted by the NYC collective is a a living example of what real diversity looks and feels like. Chinese American violinist & genre blurring artist ZenHow said it best, “Acceptance is so important because without it, you’re just putting on different masks all the time”.
With an all star lineup of singers, rappers, poets and instrumentalists, the brunch felt like a mini concert more than an open mic. Greeted by the high energy of Al Boogie at the door, attendees stepped into the Baker Falls world full of artwork, mirrors and remarkable sound system. Mimosas and freshly baked treats set the tone for a relaxed environment where steel can sharpen steel.

Community is very important, and being a part of a community or hub of people that understand the effort it takes to make art can really help you feel more grounded. – Singer/Producer Mercedes Gala
Barcelona native Meïa Santiago, expressed how The Wavys encourages her need for creative freedom. Being Latina, too often the singer-songwriter has been confronted by the suggestion of what kind of music she “should” be producing. Within the Wavy community, Meïa has found like minded creatives. “ They are brave. They are rebels. And now we need rebel people. You know, it’s all about revolutionary spirits. If not, we’re lost”.
These auditions are a reminder that art starts in community. That every breakout moment is built on days like these. Made possible by The NYC Mayors Office of Media and Entertainment, The Wavy Awards is a space for authenticity, courage, and collaboration. Founded in 2021, The Wavy Awards were born from a demand for change in an industry for the historically excluded and marginalized talent. With performances by Holly Cinnamon, West Foster, Bexie, Gia Grier and more, The Wavys are starting the 3rd quarter of the year with purposeful momentum.
The next award show is set for September 20th at Quad Studios in Times Square—but the real work starts now. Tickets for The Wavy Awards 2025 are now live. Step into the room.
