A flagship initiative of West Ward Beans
What would an elder tell the next generation if someone sat down, turned on a microphone and asked them to leave one letter behind?
That question sits at the center of Tomorrow’s Yesterday, an intergenerational storytelling initiative that asks elders across Essex County to leave one thing behind on purpose: a letter to the people who come after them.
Every family carries stories that never reach a book or an archive. They live at kitchen tables and in car rides. They come out of hardship, faith, work and love, and they pass from one generation to the next by accident — until the day nobody is left who can tell them.
Tomorrow’s Yesterday begins before that day comes.
The Project
Each participant chooses one lesson they want to outlive them.
It starts as a conversation with journalist James Rashad — long, unhurried, built around a moment that shaped the life. What comes out of it becomes a letter, written by the participant, addressed to people they will never meet. They read it aloud in their own voice, and both records are kept: the page, and the sound of the person saying it.
The conversation is the work. The letter is the point.
Why It Matters
History records what happened. Tomorrow’s Yesterday asks the harder question: what deserves to be remembered?
Communities should get to preserve themselves. History is usually written about us. This is written by us, and it’s addressed. Archives and newspapers document events. None of them were built to hold what a person works out over 70 years — the decision that changed a family’s direction, the value that held a block together, the failure that taught more than any success.
These are inheritances.
Essex County First
The first collection is elders across Essex County — Newark and Irvington on one end, Millburn and Essex Fells on the other. Twenty-two towns inside one county line, with a distance between them that has nothing to do with miles.
Tomorrow’s Yesterday grows one letter at a time. West Ward Beans is building the partnerships and governance to carry this work responsibly, including an independent nonprofit launching in 2027.
One Letter at a Time
Everybody leaves something. Most of it is property. The rest is the part that keeps working — the lesson that surfaces in somebody’s decision 40 years after the person who taught it is gone.
Every letter is handed from one generation to the next.
A reminder. A warning. A hope. A blessing. A bequest.
