The 983 “Yellow/Red” drops October 1. Who’s fronting it matters as much as the shoe.
The sneaker business runs on culture, and culture decides which brands win. New Balance keeps winning by mining its own archive and handing the pitch to Black stars.
The New Balance 983 arrives October 1 in a “Yellow/Red” makeup, $160, through NewBalance.com and select retailers. Style code U9834EV0. The look is loud by design: olive mesh under layered yellow and lime panels, grey laces and “N” logos for contrast, red across the heel and the exposed ABZORB pods, with reflective hits that flash silver-white in direct light.
The 983 borrows from New Balance’s early-2000s performance runners — the same DNA behind the 9060 and the 2000 series — and slims it down, with elliptical ABZORB SBS pods and wave-like molding through the sole.
New Balance built the launch around tennis champion Coco Gauff and rapper Aminé. Gauff said the shoe “goes with any outfit,” styling it across sport and street. Two Black stars — one from center court, one from the booth — chosen to carry a brand into relevance.
New Balance spent years climbing out of its safe-dad-shoe reputation, and it got there by handing silhouettes to people whose taste the culture follows — Action Bronson, Ronnie Fieg, now Gauff and Aminé. The shoes move because the right people wear them first.
The 983 hits October 1 in unisex sizing. Resale is already tracking above the $160 retail, so raffles are the safer route than a launch-day cart.
