The R8 Mark II adds the stabilization the first model skipped, announced the same day it went official.
The gear that lets a small shop shoot broadcast-quality work keeps getting better and staying relatively cheap. Canon just pushed that forward.
Canon announced the EOS R8 Mark II on Tuesday, and the headline is the exact thing reviewers spent three years calling out on the original: in-body image stabilization. The 2023 R8 shot beautiful full-frame images in a light body but skipped stabilization entirely. The Mark II adds it — reported around 7.5 stops — for sharper handheld photos and steadier video without a gimbal.
The rest of the package: a redesigned, more angular body with a bigger viewfinder hump, full weather sealing, and two genuinely useful features. Pre-shooting buffers frames before you fully press the shutter, so you catch the moment you reacted to a beat late. Canon is also adding a tool that builds 3D video from a flat image, with plans to bring it to other EOS R bodies by firmware.
Price is where it turns practical. The R8 Mark II lands around $1,899 for the body, with a kit near $2,099 and a new Speedlite EL-5 II at $379. That’s up from the original, but it holds a line most rivals crossed long ago: full-frame, stabilized, under two grand. Canon called the redesign a “Modern EOS Aesthetic with a Classic Camera Design Philosophy.”
A camera story is a media story. Independent outfits — newsletters, documentaries, profile films, work built outside legacy newsrooms — run on affordable gear that punches above its price. A stabilized full-frame body at this cost lowers the barrier for the next person building a platform with a camera and an idea.
The R8 Mark II ships in late October. If you already shoot Canon glass, the stabilization alone makes it worth watching. If you’re buying full-frame for the first time, this is the new floor.
